The health of your teeth and gums directly impacts your whole body's health and wellness. Sometimes, to protect your health, your dentist may need to remove a tooth with a treatment known as dental extraction. Our caring and skilled dentists work hard to ensure the entire process is as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

Many patients wonder how long after an extraction can you get an implant? Before we answer that question, we would like you to read some important information regarding tooth extractions and dental implants.

Reasons for a Tooth Extraction

Tooth loss can occur from decay, gum disease, injury, medical conditions, and natural wear. A person may require a dental extraction to reduce the health risk to surrounding teeth and gum tissue.

More than 36 million Americans have complete tooth loss, and 120 million Americans have at least one missing tooth. Also, untreated tooth loss can lead to changes in nutrition, diabetes, obesity, some cancers, and coronary artery disease.

At 50th and France Dental Care, we only recommend tooth extraction as a last resort to preserve your oral health.

Common reasons for removing a tooth are:

  • Severe damage from trauma or decay
  • Overcrowding
  • Tooth impaction (e.g., wisdom teeth)
  • Preparing for orthodontics

Extractions by your dentist are guaranteed to be effective and comfortable because we use a local anesthetic to numb the area. The first 24 hours after an extraction are crucial. During this time, we encourage patients to use ice packs to reduce swelling and take pain medications as directed. We will also give you instructions on how to make the most of your recovery and prevent dry socket.

Some extractions, like wisdom teeth, don't require replacement. However, if we extract a tooth necessary for function or aesthetics, we will provide a personalized plan to replace that tooth. At 50th and France Dental Care, we offer custom-made tooth replacements, including dental implants.

What Are Dental Implants?

Many consider dental implants the gold standard of tooth replacement, and for a good reason. Dental implants are the closest to natural teeth you can get when it comes to function, appearance, and comfort. Studies show that dental implant surgery has a very high success rate of nearly 98 percent.

Dental implants consist of thin, titanium posts topped with custom-made dental crowns. The implant post permanently replaces tooth roots below the gumline, providing a solid foundation for your new smile.

Dental Implants After a Tooth Extraction

Because dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, they're much stronger and more reliable than removable dentures. There are many types of dental implant options for after a tooth extraction.

Immediate Implant Placement

Sometimes, placing a dental implant right after a tooth extraction is possible. The patient must be free of gum disease and have a healthy jawbone.

Early Implant Placement

Early implant placement, or immediate-delayed implant placement, occurs two to three months after the tooth extraction. This brief waiting period allows the gums to adequately heal so the gums and jawbone can receive the implant without concern.

Delayed Implant Placement

A patient can receive a delayed implant placement three or more months after a dental extraction. Delayed implant placement may be ideal for patients with severe gum disease or vulnerable gum tissue. Some patients may need a bone graft or other restorative treatments to improve their oral health before dental implant placement surgery.

Ultimately, each patient has unique smile needs and goals. When your jaw bone and gums are healthy and strong, you're ready to embark on your dental implant journey!

Planning for Your Forever Smile

Dental implants are perhaps the best type of replacement teeth, but the process requires careful planning. At 50th and France Dental Care, we provide patients with dental implants who desire a fully functional and aesthetic smile. Tooth loss can inhibit your ability to chew, speak, and socialize with confidence and ease. Fortunately, modern dental implants look, feel, and function just like natural teeth, so you can enjoy a healthy grin again.

Over time, the jawbone shrinks if the empty socket isn't replaced with another tooth to stimulate the tissue. If necessary, your dentist may also perform socket preservation during the tooth extraction to prevent this deterioration from occurring. Ultimately, socket preservation reduces the risk of needing a bone graft in the future and allows for expedited implant placement.
