Proper Oral Care

Brush twice daily. We are told to do this from a young age in order to maintain our oral health. Yet, brushing incorrectly can be almost as harmful as not brushing at all and if you don’t pair good brushing habits with flossing, mouthwash, and drinking lots of water, you aren’t getting the full clean you need to avoid tooth decay and gum disease. The dentists at 50th and France Dental Care strive to give you and your family the best dental care in the Edina, MN area, yet true oral health starts at home.

Best Oral Care Practices

Brushing – Brushing your teeth requires more than a toothbrush being dragged across your teeth. Everything from the type of toothbrush you use, to how you hold it, will all work together to give you a better clean. It is important when choosing a toothbrush to find one with soft bristles. It may seem like the harder the bristle the more they clean, but hard bristles can actually damage and inflame your gums. Holding the brush at a forty-five-degree angle towards your gum line will allow the brush to clean the plaque out of the space between your teeth and gums.

Flossing – Many people think brushing alone is enough to clean your teeth and avoid flossing altogether. This can actually be detrimental to your oral health. If you skip flossing, you are only cleaning seventy percent of your teeth. Flossing at least once a day will help remove the hard to reach plaque hiding in the gum pockets between teeth to help lower your risk of developing gingivitis. Again, be gentle when using floss. Snapping the floss in between teeth can irritate gums and make them bleed, so simply running the floss back and forth with light pressure should be enough to get it between tight teeth.

Mouthwash – Though mouthwash does not have to be an essential part of your oral care routine, it can still help if you are more prone to gum disease than others. Many people use it for fresher breath, but it can’t actually cure severe bad breath, and the effect may only last a few hours. It is helpful, however, in removing some of the bad bacteria in your mouth and dislodging loose plaque from brushing and flossing. Be sure to choose a mouthwash with a lower alcohol content, since some can actually damage teeth after a while.

Drink water – Water is great for not only your general health, but your dental health as well. Each time you drink water, especially at meals, it helps keep food particles and bacteria from attaching to your teeth during the day.
