Crowns and Bridges in Edina MN
Having a beautiful, healthy smile is important. Damaged, broken, and missing teeth can affect your ability to eat and chew, as well as reduce your self-esteem and make you reluctant to talk and laugh around others. If you have one or more damaged, broken, or decayed teeth, a strong, natural-looking crown or a bridge may be the solution you're looking for.
At 50th and France Dental Care, your Edina dentist offers a variety of choices in crowns and bridges, including the CEREC crown system for crown construction and placement in one visit. Our staff has the knowledge and experience to help you make the right choice for your dental needs.
Beautiful, Sturdy Crowns Protect Damaged Teeth
When a tooth has been cracked or chipped or has lost much of its material to decay, it can become weak and brittle. In many cases, a crown made of metal, ceramic, or porcelain can be used to restore a damaged tooth and not only give you a beautiful smile once again, but also protect the damaged tooth from further deterioration.
Custom-crafted crowns are made to match your teeth and look completely natural. The crown covers the entire tooth in a cap, preventing further cracking and decay and offering additional structure to damaged and weakened teeth. Crowns are a long-lasting solution to a wide range of dental issues.
Crowns are also usually recommended after a root canal treatment. The removal of the tooth's nerve structure and blood supply can leave a tooth brittle and susceptible to breaking. A beautiful, strong dental crown will help keep your tooth safe and intact and reduce the likelihood the tooth will need to be extracted.
Dental Bridges Restore Missing Teeth
For teeth that have already been lost or extracted, a dental bridge may be a good restoration choice. Bridges use the strong teeth on either side of the site of your missing tooth or teeth to anchor one or more false teeth. These bridges also use crowns over your remaining adjacent teeth to support the restoration and make sure it's durable.
Bridges are a permanent restoration, unlike removable partial dentures. You don't have to take them out to clean them. They are cemented or cured onto your natural teeth and remain in your mouth at all times, restoring your ability to chew after tooth loss without messy adhesives or slipping dentures.
What to Expect When Getting a Crown or a Bridge
Whether your restoration consists of a dental crown, multiple crowns, or a bridge, the process is very similar. The team at our Edina dental office will take a digital or conventional impression of your mouth to ensure the crown or bridge matches your natural teeth. The tooth will be prepared, which consists of some shaping to provide a secure anchor for your crown. If very little tooth remains, a post or build-up may be necessary to offer additional support.
If you are getting a CEREC crown, the crown will usually be created and placed during the same visit. For traditional crowns and bridges, a temporary crown will be placed over the prepared tooth to protect it. Once the permanent crown or bridge is complete, you simply return to our office for a placement appointment, where we remove the temporary crown, make any necessary adjustments to the permanent crown, and bond it into place.
